Tasting Budget Beer and Picking a Winner
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Your favorite “cheap beer” might be running on nostalgia, not flavor. Big Z, Chris, and Rob sit down with Matt for a follow up to the Budget Beer Battle from season 1 and do the only fair thing: pour a lineup of low-priced brews, sniff the damage, take the sip, and score what we actually taste.
The table gets interesting fast with Utica Club, Foster’s, Coors Banquet, and Peroni, and we keep circling the same question: is it worse to taste bad or to taste like nothing at all? We argue about noses that don’t match the palate, beers that disappear the second they hit your tongue, and why one bottle earns points just for feeling like real beer. Then we total up the numbers and realize our “subjective” system is changing in real time.
Round two brings Iron City, Corona Extra, Garage Beer, and a final contender that makes all of us stop and go, “Oh, there it is.” We talk beer tasting notes, beer pong utility, ABV, and value, including points-per-cost math that turns the episode into a genuine hunt for the best budget beer. One clear winner separates itself from a table full of mediocrities and earns the crown the hard way: by tasting like beer-flavored beer.
If you’ve got a budget lager you swear by, we want to hear it. Subscribe, share this with your beer group chat, and leave a review so more people can find the show, then tell us which cheap beer deserves a shot in the next battle.

Cold Open And Table Setup
ChrisThis might not make the cut. It definitely won't make the cut. Coming in here hot with three out of fueled people are put up this other one. Wild experience, by the way.
RobWe have clipped off. Welcome to Matt and Friend Brink the Universe!
MattWelcome back, everyone. We are doing the budget beer battle round two.
RobRound two.
MattSame crew as we did all the way back in season one. That's right. Let's go around the table, introduce yourselves. Uh, Big Z over here. What's up, everybody? It's Rob. I totally screwed with Rob right there. Looked at him and pointed at Chris because this is right after the wartime leaders episode, and some of us are still feeling it from last one.
RobWell, but I'll tell you, I uh reacted appropriately. Thank you.
Big ZYou did hold your own.
RobYou anticipated.
MattHere we go.
RobSo we did work by you. Head on a swivel.
MattWe are gonna go around this table. We're gonna do this a little bit differently than we did last time. So subjective scoring. We're gonna taste some really bad budget beer.
RobWell, we don't know that they're bad. I think that that's that's that's an assumption you're making. We're gonna taste some low-priced beer.
MattQuality, we're gonna taste some unexcellent beer.
Big ZWell, see. I mean it's sponsors.
ChrisHe's campaigning again over that. We could get shocked. We were last we were.
Big ZLion's head, lion's head.
ChrisCrushed last time.
Big ZNipah, baby.
MattI'll give you the list up front here of what we got. And we're gonna go. You know what? We're not gonna do that. I'm just gonna have anybody everybody introduce their beer. We're gonna do two rounds. Rob's gonna go first. I'm going first. I'm going first. I'm gonna go first. And we're gonna go right around the table.
ChrisYou're gonna go first. I am okay. Very decisive, this leader of ours. So hold on. Let's give everybody a cup.
RobRed solo cup.
MattA red solo cup. So I'm gonna say for this episode, I am using, I'm going back to season one. I got the Matt and Friends Drink the Universe, Yeti.
Big ZI want to do that. I never remember to bring mine. I want to do that too. Yeah, I didn't bring mine today either.
MattI'm committed. Any pour I get, I'm finishing today. That's what we're doing.
Big ZI agree.
MattCongrats. All right.
ChrisBut remember, I don't think that's as that's not as much of a flex as it makes you. No, it's really not. It's really not because I'm gonna put like three drops of each in here. Yeah.
MattSo we're all probably around 4%.
Big ZWell, why don't you let someone else pour your beer for you then? So our first moved out quick, didn't you? Moved
Utica Club Kicks It Off
Big Zon real quick.
MattThey're moving, our first contender hailing from Utica, New York, is Utica Club Pilsner Lager Beer. As it says on the front.
Big ZShout out to Dave, upstate New York. Go on.
MattDavid, listen to our podcast. Absolutely. So this on the can here, we got two X's and pure. XX Pure.
ChrisThat's one good and porn. We got the first. Not quite as sexy. The Utica beer. No, not quite sexy enough.
Big ZThis is just edging. Holy off the rails already. This beer just edges you for finish. Right out the gate.
MattLet's see what's going on. We got the first beer sold after prohibition, brewed from the best quality. Maltz. Now, how can we prove that? Choice is tops for the absolute is what you write.
ChrisAbsolutely pure.
MattAnd it's got two X's. It says absolutely pure. And I I picked this one because Absolutely pure.
Big ZAbsolutely pure.
RobCan I ask, has anybody ever heard of this brand before? Well, Utica. Oh, you have? Okay. So there's there's two one. Have you heard of this before?
MattI actually have had this, but it's been 2018 is when I had this.
Big ZNUDICA Brewing. This is Utica Club. Utica Club, yes. It's two very different things. It's two very different things.
RobWho is Utica Club brewed by? If not. Oh no. No.
Big ZI'm just letting it happen. With all that head, there should be a third X.
RobWith all the head all my pants are wet.
MattPandemonium out the gate. My dad's the one who told me about this beer. He said he used to drink it back in college. It was like his budget beer when he desperately needed beer. I've seen it a couple, and then I was on a business trip way back in 2018. It was at the bar. I said, I'm going to try it. I had a sip. I can't, for the life of me, remember what it tastes like, other than like I did not perhaps enjoy the experience. So here we go.
RobYeah, it's uh it's real heavy. That is.
ChrisWell, I didn't pour it. Oh God, we are.
Big ZOh, it smells delightful. No, it does not smell delight.
ChrisStarting off rough.
Big ZThis is not.
ChrisI mean All right, fellas, are we ready? This smells like the bathroom at a ball game. Oh, okay. I was gonna go Frat House, but yeah, ball game. Ball game is probably better. Walk quite walk into a baseball game.
Big ZOkay, is this the men's room? Communal urine or the ones that's separated? Slightly separate.
MattAre you saying is this trough or trough separated? Yep. Okay.
Big ZAll right. Uh cheers, everybody.
MattOh, God help us.
Big ZJust drink it. Cheers.
ChrisDon't try to smell it. What are you thinking? Oh, it's not terrible. Super light in flavor.
Big ZActually, not not bad.
ChrisLike I barely get anything out of it.
Big ZYeah, I mean, like there's no flavor at all.
ChrisYeah, this is water.
Big ZIt's just like carbon. I mean, I'm I'm getting malt.
RobYeah. Like I'm getting malt and malt only. Like minor malt. But but it's like very watered down malt.
Big ZWhat's the alcohol content on this?
RobTwo.
MattFive. Five percent?
Big ZFive?
MattThat's surprising.
Big ZThis is the first beer after prohibition?
MattUh well, according to the can.
Big ZI mean it's it's I mean I've had worse beer. I have. If I was playing beer pong, I wouldn't mind this.
ChrisOh, that's that's a good point. But it's five percent. This is gonna sneak up on you.
Big ZYeah, we're really gonna be a little bit more.
ChrisI mean yingling is also five percent, more or less. Four and a half.
Big ZGive or take.
MattI was gonna say four, four and a half-ish, yeah. I don't think it quite makes it. Listen, it doesn't really matter to me. Yingling definitely heavier flavor than this. 100%.
Big ZWell, no, this is that's what I mean. This is got nothing. You could just chug this back.
MattYeah, yeah. This is the beer, though, that if you're playing beer pong with it, you're gonna play four or five games and it's gonna feel like you got punched in the face. And you're gonna be like, I agree, Matt. Oh, okay. I have made decisions today. That's that's gonna be this beer.
Big ZAlthough the flavor has over I think five percent more than a Miller Light. Okay, so out of ten. I don't buy that.
ChrisOut of ten, I would give this a three. That's exactly where I already have it written down. That's where I'm at. I'm a three.
Big ZI mean, it's got no flavor.
ChrisYeah.
Big ZI'm gonna go two.
ChrisI'm I'm gonna say three because I think there's at least one, if not more, that are going to be worse than this.
Big ZI'm not I'm not doing that, Chris. I'm this is what what I taste. No, no, I I guess nothing.
ChrisI'm not saying that I'm not gonna reuse a three, but I just feel like there's gonna be a two or a one down there.
Big ZI gave a point for the fact that it's flothed all over math.
MattDo you have a score for you? I'm gonna give it a four. Of course you are. And here's here's why. A, I brought it and I don't care. And B, I think it's gonna come out towards the top of the scale here if we keep doing this. I actually don't think this. I would buy more of this. Really? You think that? For $7.99 for the six pack? So you think six pack of tall boys? Okay, are you you're gonna add price into this?
RobI've listened I have no price information. I I did not pay attention to what I was buying. I'm sorry.
Big ZQuick Google it. I'm sure that we could. Like for $7.99, you got exactly what you paid for. Nothing.
RobYeah, no, no, I think that that's fair because Mike's two cancels out Matt's four. So basically it was three is across the board. That's that's a 12.
Foster’s Oil Can Reality Check
RobSo I'm gonna go with mine next, which is Foster's Croiky! Australian for beer. I hope it's not Australian for piss. That baby ate my dingo.
Big ZWait, nope, the dingo ate my baby.
ChrisThis is the this is the beer that everybody has had because we've all been to Outback before. And you go to Outback Steakhouse and you're like, I gotta drink a Foster's. So is that what you do?
Big ZNo.
ChrisCome on.
RobI'm not the only one here. Before I pour this, this is indeed 5% alcohol by volume.
Big ZSpooge all over him.
MattI'm kind of disappointed. That was his MO for like two seasons, and he's been doing this.
RobUh this is a big fat oil drum can. So uh let me give everybody their pour.
Big ZWe should not have let Rob do the pours. Yeah, you know.
MattIt's about 20 years, I don't think I've had any of this.
RobI have a lot of this. Did that give you a lot of head? God damn it. I said that. I'm just gonna let it out there.
Big ZThe knob, Rob, I'm not surprised.
RobOh boy. That's a throwback. I hope you release the wartime leaders episode first. You should definitely do that.
MattDo I need to make that t-shirt? Yes. Can it be a t-shirt? Yes.
RobNo, it cannot be a t-shirt. Otherwise, it can't be.
MattYou realize there's one right now that's a quote from you that says, I have terrible tastes in my mouth. Rob. Like that's a t-shirt people can go online and buy right now. I did not know. Visit our T public website.
RobYou can buy that T-shirt. This one's for Steve Irwin. He's a crocodile hunter. He's dead. We love him, though. What a loving tribute. Wow. He said we love him, though.
Big ZI was actually gonna say if you could sponsor it. Stingraid my heart, Rob.
RobStingraid my heart knows on this better.
Big ZWow. So light again. There's such a distinct lack of flavor. There's less flavor in this than less the first one. Yeah, there really is. I'm so confused. It smelled better. It does. It smelled a lot better. Yeah. And then there's nothing.
RobThat is an accurate description. I'll give this a strong two. Alright. Strong two.
Big ZThis is my problem with rating one at the gate. I I should have given the first one a three. Because I'm gonna give this one a two. It's okay. It's I mean, it's all right. Matt's gonna give this a seven. Hey, fosters, earmuffs. This is bad.
ChrisBut again, this isn't not undrinkable. You know, like I can drink this, and I'm not offended by myself drinking.
MattWould you say the same about the Utica Club? Uh Did it offend your sensibilities?
RobNo, neither of these are pretty on point with each other. Like, I don't know that this is any worse than Utica Club. I'm just getting it. This tastes a little bit less beery than the Utica Club, which is why I'm going two instead of three. Agreed.
MattSo there's an armed conflict.
RobBut I'm splitting hairs at this point. Rob, I'm I'm locked up with you.
MattThere's an armed conflict between upstate New York and Australia. I think both sides will be drinking equally as good beer. I I'm I I'm giving this one. You know what? I'm gonna even it out. I'm gonna even it out. I'm gonna say four for this one as well.
Big ZWhere did you get your math from?
RobThis is the Welszer. It is my podcast. It's the it's the Skevskala. It's the it's the skewed scale. Yes. Okay. I once wrote a song about this. We won't talk about it on this podcast.
MattIt's because I don't like you and the reference. Finish your damn beer. Finish your shitty beer and then finish the whole can of fosters. Yo, pound that can. I mean, that's a big can. That is. That's what she said. You can do it. You are the champion. Did I ever tell that story on this podcast? It might be tired.
RobOh, that's the best. You've probably told that story.
MattI don't know if I have. So Dingus over here, Staley, last name, decided he was gonna buy camo. Was it 5X? 5X. That's that's two more than porn. Yeah. Which was literally what he said when he bought the can. He was like, there's two X's more here than porn. We played Edward 40 hands. He did two 40s in what? Ooh. 11 minutes?
RobNo, no. Stop. Go on. Pause. Was it two? If it was two, that is two. Oh god. So if it was two, this would make me a lot more impressed with myself. But uh but yeah, so your brother finished his 40s in like seven minutes. Okay. And then I was like, well, I can't be that far behind. I had like three quarters of my last 40.
MattIt's a significant amount of 40. Let's say it was 3840.
Big ZI mean, these are the same two people that came to my dorm room and drank an entire case of yingling. An entire case of yingling. And a whole bottle of rum.
RobIt wasn't a bottle.
Big ZIt was a whole handle of rum in what three hours? Two and a half.
RobListen, we were young, we were larger, we were drinkier. I don't know. Anyway, so not any smarter. So he finishes first, and I go, oh my God. I I feel behind now. And I had three quarters of my 40 left. And I thought the only way I can redeem myself here is to chug the three-quarters of this 40. That's right. So I did that.
ChrisBecause we don't lose. This would be this would be 30 ounces of for those doing the math.
RobRight. So so I chugged that in what? Uh Matt, would you say it was under 20 seconds that I chugged?
Big ZIt was definitely under 30. You know, I'm not sure this is something you should be proud of.
RobThere's nothing here you should be proud of. Yeah. So I chugged all of this in less than 30 seconds. Go on. And then I'm trying to belch the sentence, I am the champion. And then I just vomit the eggs and the hot dogs that I had eaten for breakfast from earlier that day. Yes, mind you, this was like noon.
MattSo just so you know exactly how this occurred, it was I am the champion. And that is exactly in my very good friend's bedroom. This would be a good time for Rob to formally apologize for defiling your bedroom. Sorry, John.
Big ZAll right, all right. So this is an oil can.
ChrisHow many ounces is it? Is it 25? So many.
RobSo it's the same as what I bought. So 25.4 fluid ounces, 750 mils. So this is a fifth.
ChrisAll right, Z, which uh beer are you going with first?
Coors Banquet Hits A New Low
Big ZThe Banquet Beer. Coors original.
ChrisNice.
Big ZThe banquet beer. So picture yourself along the Colorado Rockies, along the river.
ChrisI am. I'm doing it right now. Right? And there's a bear. Am I on a Dodge Ram? Yeah, probably.
Big ZOkay. And then some guy with a mustache is gonna pull out a six-pack of beer from the river, because that's where they keep it.
RobAnd give us a mustache ride. If you if you'd like.
Big ZBut then I want one. Course. The banquet beer. That's what we have.
MattFor that, since we we hit Super Troopers references surprisingly early, I looked for Schlitz. I could not find six schlitzes. I could not find six free.
Big ZAll right, so this is the course. In the traditional medicine bottle. Bottle? Medicine now.
RobThat is a cool bottle because it makes me feel like I've gone to the past.
Big ZI know. It's kind of like the first time you have red stripe, and you're like, oh, I want just gonna drink this because of the bottle.
RobJamaican for beer. I don't know what accent that was. It was Indian. I was way off.
Matt140 money too. 140 shrimp three.
RobNo, no, no.
MattCome on, Jamaica.
RobIt's running.
Big ZAlright, turns out I'm the heavy poor. My bad. I had to open the second bottle.
RobTo be fair, these bottles are significantly smaller. Is it just me or does this have no nose at all?
Big ZI haven't smelled it yet.
RobI just took a side. I can't smell anything.
Big ZNo, this has This has a noticeable nose. Excuse me. I have facts and no one's listening. Oh, facts. Alright.
RobAre they the facts of life? Are you Gary Coleman? No, they're not.
Big ZBut as of you take the good, you take the bad. As of 12.39 p.m. this mor this afternoon. Sorry. This cost me for a six-pack, a six-pack, six bottles, ten dollars and eighty five cents.
RobThis is water, dude.
Big ZShut up for a second.
RobI just took a sip of this. Shut up. This has the least amount of taste out of the three things we've had in our bodies so far.
Big ZI was kind of expecting that.
RobYeah. I'm actually surprised by that. It smells like piss. I think I've gone cosmic.
ChrisThis is the communal drop. I'll let you know.
Big ZOh, I've wildly underrated the first two beers. Uh-oh. I'm a little nervous to try it.
RobI I hate to tell you, dude. But just in comparison with everything thus far, this is a one for me.
Big ZOh, this is not good.
RobYou know, like it's not that it's bad. It's just a it just has no flavor. It disappears so quick.
Big ZThat's what I'm saying. But no, it has something. It has something the other two beers don't have, and I can't pick calories? Nope. It's something. There's something there that makes me not want to drink this. So it's got something. Because the other two beers are drinkable.
MattChristopher, look at this. The single best picture view I've ever taken. We're gonna hold that one. We're definitely posting that one later.
ChrisIt hits you hard like immediately. Right. And then disappeared.
Big ZThere's something. There's I don't know what it is. Yeah.
ChrisThe flavor is poor.
Big ZWhat is it? I don't know.
ChrisUm feet. This is feet. This is a one for me.
Big ZIt's a one for you? No, no, no. It's not skunky tasting.
RobBut it's Matt, here's the problem, right? It's a one for me because it's worse than the other two we've had. And I gave one a three and one a two. Well, that's my.
Big ZI mean you pigeonholed yourself.
RobRight?
Big ZSo, like, what do you want me to do here?
MattHey, it's my podcast. Go to partial points if you need to. Point five crack the five. We've not done our job right. All right. So we got a 0.5 on this one. I mean, this is bad. Cores? You're going 0.5?
Big ZYeah, I'll go one. What do you think? I would go one. I would go one. If you want me to round up, I'll round up for fairness, but it's not good.
RobOne of the revolving quotes of this podcast Sam Elliott, read our open copy for our intro. Rob's still going for it today. Latin friends. Drink the I can't.
MattSo this quote has been said on this podcast many times. If the option were sobriety or this, I may choose sobriety.
Big ZOh no. If if it was like it was cores or a juice box, give me the juice box all day.
MattI might go to the juice box for this one. Chris, what was your number on this one? Why?
Big ZI want this in my beer pong glass.
MattAlright, we got three ones and a.5, which has said 3.5. Chris, you're gonna culture us up here.
Peroni Brings Actual Beer Flavor
ChrisOh, okay. Yeah. I brought the lovely Italian beer Peroni, which I used to love back in the day. I haven't had it in for forever. Here's a little taste of the can.
RobI'm enjoying the can. It was a very good can.
MattRob giving us a quality brando over there.
RobI'm trying.
MattThank you, Rob Father.
Big ZThe Burt Father? I'm just gonna write cores on my list as shit.
RobThe beer was shit. It was no good.
MattI have had peeroni as well. It's been a hot minute since I have it.
Big ZI have not.
MattI don't believe I've ever drank a peeroni before.
ChrisI'll tell you though. Apparently I'm like a cultural restaurant whore, and whenever I go to like uh an Italian place, I want a Peroni beer. And if I go to Outback, I want a Foster's.
RobListen, I think that that's fair. I will also say, I don't know if my nose is quit, but to me, this smells the exact same as the course.
MattRob's apparently Rob's senses are giving up one by one after doing this podcast for three years. This one's a little a little punchier.
Big ZThere there's more here. Yeah. I mean, like, there's a lot more.
RobYeah. I'm gonna take a sip. Here we go. Very light.
Big ZBut there's there's something.
RobYeah.
Big ZIt's kind of tasty, actually.
RobScott. Oh my god. I don't like the back end. It's sad that I'm that I'm back to two. Like I think that this is very much in line with the fosters.
Big ZI actually think this is better than anything we have on the table.
ChrisYeah. Interesting. Yep. Not by much. No, but like there's more enjoyable flavor to this. But again, this is a beer where you taste it right away and then it it's gone.
Big ZThere's a computer.
ChrisI would be a problem with this. This would be a thousand percent. And again, this is great with Italian food or any food, honestly. Like this is gonna complement food.
Big ZIf you want a metal and what's going on, you know what's kind of surprising to me?
RobNot feeling it. Nobody here has a light beer. A whole whole thing. But they all are tasting like light beer.
Big ZWhat do you mean you're not feeling it?
MattI'm not feeling it.
Big ZLike what what aren't you feeling?
MattI don't like the initial taste. The back end's okay.
RobEverything else scores above what they deserve. What do you think? And then this one you don't like. This one actually has flavor.
Big ZNo.
RobInteresting.
Big ZI'm not feeling it. Based on that fact alone, I want to put a four on this.
ChrisI have a four for it.
Big ZBecause out of everything we had on the table, this actually has flavors.
ChrisThis is the first one that tastes like beer to me.
Big ZListen, I will go to a three fast. Yeah, it does. It falls off real fast, but it's good. I will go to a three.
RobAll right, rounds of three. I will go to a three. I don't think this is any worse than anything we've had today, but I don't know that it's any better than anything we've had today.
Big ZWell, I think it's way better than anything we've had today. Okay, that's fair. I I'm gonna go four, but here's what I'm gonna say. I'm gonna put this in a box. Agreed. For what it is, it's the best we've had on the table, for sure.
MattI vehemently disagree to the tune of a chew. No, I don't know. What do you skip a lot? Chew. Dose. Okay. Deuces. I just know. It's not the skiff.
Big ZI mean, there's something.
MattRob is so rarely hammered on this podcast, and he has five shades left of silver right now.
Big ZCan we get your scores from this? You gave what to Utica Club?
MattDoesn't matter, my podcast. Moving on.
Big ZNo, I think that people want to know. What do you got for Udiclub? I didn't write.
RobFour. He gave a four to his own beer.
Big ZFour to his own beer. Okay. And then to Chris's.
MattYou gave a two to this? I gave it. No, I give a two to the fosters. And then and then No, what'd you give to this?
RobThe Peroni?
MattTwo. You give a two to this? Yeah. Do you give a two to this and a four to Utica Club? This does nothing for me. Absolutely nothing. I'm being generous. If it was sobriety or this in the cooler, I'm going for a bottle of Deer Park water. Thank you.
Big ZHold on. I'll be honest. So far. Next to the cores. You're telling me if you had a Peroni or a Cores or water, you're still going to water?
MattI'm going to the Utica Club over this.
Big ZThat's not in the question.
MattWhat's my cooler? Your cooler is your cooler. My cooler. That's the great part about drinking beer. We all have our own cooler. Listen, here's the thing for me.
Big ZYeah, some of us do so.
RobSo far out of the stuff that we've done. I am doing that. Is the definition of subjectively. No, it's not. Okay, hold on. Can we all agree though? Out of the four that we've had so far, nothing is like leaps and bounds about it.
ChrisWe haven't broken a five yet. We're already not been offended by anything. The course, I'm slightly offended, maybe.
Big ZOh, I was offended. I was offended.
RobI'm offended just because like I want to believe that this is like a cornerstone brand of American beer.
Big ZThis beer is on so many commercials.
RobBut if I gave this to a man in Germany and said this is American beer, I would be embarrassed.
Big ZMy point is this your rating scale is nonsense.
MattListen, man. It is my damn podcast, you son of a bitch. I will rate it.
Big ZI was nice in the first episode we did. This is ridiculous. Alright, so after round one, I think we all three quarters of the table agree that Peronis is the best beer on the table. So far. I mean, it it tastes like something.
ChrisBut it's still it's still meant. Did I give it a three? I gave it a three. I'm keeping track, my guy. I'm this most sober, so I think I should be tracking of the maths.
RobI think if I'm remembering correctly, we had a 12 for Utica Club. We had a 12 for Utica Club. Which seems hard. The next which was Foster's far off maths. Well, let's see how good I can recall this. I think the Fosters came out to about an eight. Okay, he did it right. Or nine. The Fosters, eight or nine. The Fosters
Round One Scores And Price Shock
Robwas ten total. Oh, it was ten. Okay.
Big ZAll right, all right.
RobThe cores, and the cores probably came out to a 3.5. 3.5 if I'm remembering. Screaming score. So Peroni, Peroni, if I'm remembering, I gave a three. You guys both had fours, and then Matt with a two. Yeah. So if I could math that, that's eight, ten, thirteen. That's thirteen. So Peroni, one one ahead, not wildly above Utica Club. No.
ChrisBut above. No, and but but the Welser scale is skewing things quite a bit.
Big ZI just want you to know. I gave Welser Matt, the host of this uh esteemed podcast.
ChrisYes, yes.
Big ZEsteemed. Esteemed. The course. And told him to have a sip of that. And then Peronis head-to-head, and he chose the course.
MattSay what you will about esteemed. We've been listened to in over 30 countries.
RobBut why after that? Listen, we were he wasn't saying esteemed. Ironically, he was saying esteemed.
Big ZI was I was I was esteeming. Esteeming. I was giving you credit. And then you did that.
ChrisSo as a follow-up to uh Rob's wonderful recap of the scores. Thank you, Rob. Thus far, the cheapest beer was the Fosters. Oh second up was the Utica, then the Peroni. And Coors topping in as the most expensive beer so far. That is shocking to me as well. I'm it's not. Or wherever Z decided to buy this beer, ripping people off.
Big ZShout out to Jerry Simcoe. Jerry Simcoe, please sponsor for this.
ChrisFor all your beverage needs.
Big ZRob is on like 10 of them, but you know.
MattChris, you weren't here for the last episode. He is on an epic crusade for anybody. Like he was just throwing celebrity names.
Big ZAnd it's like the last episode of Chris, I was just tagging people and telling them to listen to the podcast.
MattSo when you see this episode come out in the last one, there are 35 hashtags with every episode.
RobAll right, let's go get a second round of beers.
Intermission And Round Two Rules
RobWe're gonna take a brief intermission. We'll be right back. Intermission. Okay, everybody. Um, should we to mix things up? Should we go the opposite way around the table? Let's go the opposite way.
MattDo we want to recap what we got the first round? I think we do. Let's go lowest score to highest here. So Cores Banquet coming in with an astonishing 3.5.
Big ZYou know, I'd like to say I'm sorry. Out of 10 not, because we all thought this would be something. Of 10.
MattOh, I didn't do the average. That's just a total.
RobNo, no, I'm sorry. Not out of 10. Out of 40. 40. Yes. Out of 40. What was that number again?
Matt3.5. Wow. We have a significantly a significant jump then to Foster's at 10. Out of 40.
Big ZYeah, thanks, Australia.
MattUtica Club. That's 25% people. Yep. Upstate New York Utica Club coming in at 12. Yep. And then Peroni at 13.
RobReally edging them out there, Chris. At the moment. It's anyone's game.
MattScrew it. I'm going first and then we're going the other way. Shocker here.
Big ZSo this will be a 12, folks.
MattNo, actually.
ChrisLet's get this
Iron City Tastes Like Nothing
Chrisout of the way. Because this is going to be terrible. Iron City. Go ahead, Matt. Introduce it.
MattI'm reading the can. I'm reading the can. The beer drinker's beer. Say that's an interesting can. Can I read it in Pittsburgh? Absolutely. Yin's guys. Iron City beer is a traditional American lager brewed over 160 years ago in classic Pittsburgh style. Crisp barley malt, notes of sweet corn and American hops. Barley malt? My malts? Crisp. Crisp barley malt. Oh, there's a pea on the internet. Okay. Notes of sweet corn and American hops create a flavorful, satisfying that's easy to drink and finishes clean. Since 1861, our signature recipe is best served, ice cold, and hard-earned. Iron City's marketing city company would love that read. Said the Amish. In case Yins didn't know.
Big ZOh, Yins are gonna love this.
MattI am a huge Steelers fan. I've said that. Let's just pour this.
Big ZYeah, it's garbage.
MattSo it's it's been many years since I've had a good Iron City. Oh, it smells downtown with a sandwich from Permanes. This is this. Do you smell that? It's what they will put hair on your chest. Oh boy. Oh, you can all wait a minute. We're all avid football fans here. You will appreciate the experience. I did have an Iron City when it was Heinz Field watching a Pittsburgh game. That was a moment.
Big ZIs that the last time they're at the Super Bowl?
MattBut also It's been way too long.
Big ZIt's been 12 years since I bit made the playoffs.
MattBut okay, I've I've always said the terrible towel is for two things. It's for swinging in joy and crying into, and for the last at least 10 years, it's definitely for crying.
Big ZI actually think it's they're they're built for cleaning this shit up.
MattNo, I don't think so. No, you don't ask the Tennessee Titans. You do not insult the towns.
RobGentlemen, I didn't think that there would be a beer with less flavor on the table than what we've already experienced. I literally I taste nothing. I taste I am shocked by this.
Big ZNothing.
RobIt's carbonated water.
Big ZIt's actually not as offensive as I thought it was gonna be. Yeah, same.
ChrisBut again, what what's wild about this experience? It smells terrible. Everything has a smell to it. No, I agree. And this one smells terrible, but everything doesn't have a flavor to it. No, this is like and I'm the sober one. This is wild.
RobI'm gonna be honest, if I need to hydrate, Matthew, I'm giving this a 0.5. Oh this is the worst beer I've had today. Come on, 0.5. Matthew, I'm gonna be honest with you. I give this a 0.5. Big Z, what do you think?
Big ZChorus was so bad. I mean, it was so bad. Chorus, again, ears, earmuffs. We we don't want you. Who cares? We don't want you. This is better than course.
RobYou think this is better than the course? I do.
Big ZI taste nothing.
ChrisAnd that offended me. Hold on.
RobI was only offended by the chorus because I know the name of the chorus. No, no, try not to. I'm gonna taste the chorus.
Big ZThe chorus is offensive. This is good. I'm putting this as a one because it's got nothing, but at least it's not offensive. Chris?
RobOne? Okay, I just drank it back to back. One point five. I'm going point five still. I I think that I don't taste anything on yeah, but I'm not tasting anything at all on the on the Iron City. The course I was offended by the taste because there was taste.
Big ZYeah, but that's the point. If you're gonna have taste and it tastes like shit, why should you get a better score for the city?
RobBut why would you have a beer that has no taste?
Big ZIt tastes like water. Um Unica Club and Foster's where you at?
ChrisThere's an argument to be had that at least a beer that doesn't have a terrible taste still gets you drunk. To that end. Yeah, Matt, what are you giving this? Four.
RobA fucking Jesus. Why? Why are you just giving yourself points? That's desperate and sad.
MattYou are a point whore. I want you to know that. I'm sad for you. I feel bad for you. Let me tell you, I'm still behind out of her. That gives me that gives a spear ice.
Big ZYou're not gonna win because cheese.
MattI should have given it a 10 just to upset the entire Apple cart.
ChrisMy guy, what uh I'm not gonna lie.
MattI got a 30-pack of wheel. I will drink the.
ChrisWhat's the cost of this sucker? Oh, for the 30-pack?
MattHe got this at the dollar store. Hold on. I need to think for a second because I'm not quite sure.
Big ZUh let's see if uh Colorado River, Allegheny River. I'll take Alberta.
MattI'm pretty sure this was less than 20 bucks. I don't know how much less for a 30 pack it was less than 20, but it was less than 20.
ChrisI just did a little bit of math. Iron City, 0.069 per fluid outs. Bottom of the barrel price-wise so far. How much? God damn.
Big ZWhat was that? It's the cheapest.
ChrisYeah. Yeah, yeah.069 cents per fluid out.
Big ZThey did some ladles into that tri-river area, threw it over a little bit of barley and hops, and called it beer.
MattHere we go. You realize if you insult the gentle folk of Pittsburgh, it will not end well for you.
Big ZI just worked with a bunch of them. I don't give a shit. We're rolling along. Pittsburgh Pirates. You got nothing else. Here we are. True statement.
MattChris, take us south of
Corona Without Lime Debate
Mattthe border. Let's go. Paul Skeens.
ChrisI decided to go with everybody's favorite, and Rob might fight me on this, but everybody's favorite Mexican beer, a corona.
Big ZAre you saying the La Paya awaits?
RobSo this is this is standard corona, not Corona lime, not Corona. This is Corona Extra.
Big ZAnd this is also Corona without the lime. There's no lime.
RobYeah, we did we did not grab limes. That's fine. We're going straight cerveza, which is Espanyol for beer. They all smell remarkably similar.
ChrisIt's pretty Why did you pour so much beer in my cup? Because you said you would finish whatever you poured.
RobYou did say that was not English stuff, but it's okay. To me, this has a sharper nose to it.
Big ZYou know, ironically, I don't get a lot.
ChrisI don't get a lot.
Big ZBut again, there's There's more than the uh there's something there. I thought I was gonna drink this and be like, oh, it's a corona. It's gonna kind of blow the rest of them away. And I don't think it does that.
ChrisNo. Personally. I think the lime the lime is carrying.
Big ZNo, I no, yeah.
ChrisThis has way more than than nothing.
Big ZYeah, but hang on. In in Matt's defense, compared to everything else on the table, it doesn't really overshadow what's on the table. No. Agreed to do it. It doesn't, it doesn't, it's not like I would say this is.
RobI think it's on par with Peroni.
Big ZYeah, I'd like to know.
RobMaybe this is way better than Peroni.
Big ZI wholeheartedly disagree that it's way better than Peroni. Oh, I see. I think it's on considerably better than that. I'm giving this my first four. I'd probably go four and a half because I know I gave something a four.
RobYou gave the Peroni a four.
Big ZYeah. Yeah. I'm gonna go four point five for that.
RobThis is eight point five so far, Christopher.
ChrisI'm just gonna do a four. I think it's tied with Peroni for me. Okay. There there's a difference in what I like out of this than the Peroni.
Big ZI I that's fair.
RobThere's a lot of things. We're at 12.5 already. We're only even if Matt gives us a half a point, we're tied for first place. You can't chug this the way you could have been. Where are you going? Like, I don't know.
MattRob is concerned about my palate at this point.
Big ZNobody knows. No, we need to give it a two.
MattAll right. So here's the thing it's crickets, but it's pleasant crickets as you're looking over field at the end of the night. I'm going for.
Big ZI'm going for. I don't understand what you taste.
ChrisI was gonna make fun of him any regardless because he's done Mexico trips before, and you know this guy's pounded Corona. Oh, absolutely.
Rob16.5? Is that is that what that just came out is?
ChrisIt is. It is.
Big ZI'm just like I want to say that I'm I'm confused as to why this is not more. Does that make sense?
RobIs that yeah, yeah. No, you would think this would be eights across the board, right?
Big ZI thought we were gonna get the.
RobAnd I guarantee you, if we squeeze the lime in it, it would be. Well, even because it's transformative. Yeah, but really.
Big ZEven without the lime, I thought maybe fives and sixes for sure.
MattWe're not we're not going with beer augmenting fruit today. We're going with what comes out of the can. It's good.
ChrisIt's a good light beer. This it's a great light. By light, you know what I mean. Like it's great. It's lighter beer. Easy to drink and and again, I'm laying in the pool.
Big ZI'm on the beer. I'm not disappointed by this. No, I'm not, I'm not. I'm just what I'm saying is this kind of happened last time, too. What I'm saying is I thought this was gonna be like hands better. Yeah, yeah.
RobIt's not, which is not. This is the PBR of this episode. Thank you. Something stole the words out of my mouth. Something that you have like he did. He did the last time he had PBR, but something that you have like muscle memory of that you remember being wonderful.
Big ZWell, it's not I remember in your year. I go to places or I'm at a a barbecue and I'm like, oh, you got corona? Yeah, I can drink that. I'll take that.
RobNope, no big deal. Who at this table would choose a land shark over Corona?
ChrisI was thinking about doing Corona and Land Shark, but I didn't want them like because they're so similar.
Big ZI wish you had. I know I should have. I think I'm going Land Shark every day.
RobIn my brain, if I'm at a concert and I see Land Shark and I see Corona, I'm getting Landshark. Yeah. I don't what is that?
ChrisI don't know why that is, because it's the less like big boxy, even though it's probably just as big boxy.
Big ZNo, it's definitely as big boxy. Yeah. Margaritaville.
ChrisIt's um but in your brain, marketing-wise, Corona's been around forever. Our parents drank it, you know, and you're like, ugh, Landshark, that's the new hip cool corona beer.
RobI just want to throw that out there. I know it's mildly irrelevant.
MattBecause it's not on the table, but the next budget beer.
Big ZYou mean Land Shark and Corona?
MattYeah, I'd enjoy Landshark, and I I don't not enjoy Corona, if that makes any sense. As Chris said, I I've been I've had the Mexican vacations. It's been easy. What is a loaded shark? I inform me. What is a loaded land shark?
ChrisTequila shake it up. Shake it up sounds like a terrible decision.
Big ZYou know what I mean. Like you mix it around with a few.
ChrisOkay, so part three. We are gonna do comparisons of cheap beer. So we'll do a Corona and a Land Shark. I can't. And we'll do like a garage beer and uh Miller Light or whatever. Yeah. You know? We'll we'll find out some pairs. I like that.
Big ZThink. I'm gonna give you some answers.
Garage Beer And Beer Pong Energy
RobListen, I I don't know about you guys. Uh well, listeners, you can't see what's on the table right now, but but right now, bad decisions there is about to be a beer that is cracked that I have such high hopes for comparatively to what we've had this whole episode, and I really hope that it's as delicious as I think it will be.
Big ZSo I stand before you with a beer made by arguably the smartest people on the football field. Who are offensive linemen. I'm not gonna let you answer. No one cares about quarterbacks.
MattBecause you were an offensive lineman.
Big ZBecause we're smarter than everybody on the field, Matt. Yeah.
MattAll right, and this is emphasis on the offensive.
Big ZThis in particular position is the smartest of all of them, and that's the center. So this beer is created by Jason and his dumb brother Travis, no one cares about. But Jason Kelsey, who is the center for the Philadelphia, well, was the center for the Philadelphia Eagles, and I'm not an Eagles fan, but I am an offensive lineman fan. So this beer is gonna be as good as he was as an offensive lineman.
MattAll right, let's be honest here for a hot second. It is really hard not to like Jason Kelsey. Because he's an offensive lineman. Travis as well. Like, you hear the podcast. Jason and Travis Kelsey. Listen to our podcast. Yeah, Jason, you live less than 30 miles south of me right now.
Big ZNew Heights, Matt and Friends combo. I'm just saying.
MattWhoa! We could have a good time. We could have a good time.
Big ZIf Tay Tay's there, I'm not I'm not upset.
MattI'm not upset with that. I'm also I will also say I do believe that Jason and Kylie are the king and queen of Philadelphia.
RobThat's fair. I smell beer. I smell beer. Anybody else smell beer for the first time today? I mean, I I've smelled it before though.
ChrisAgain, this is a beer that was designed to be extremely drinkable.
RobNo, that's very much is.
ChrisYeah.
RobAnd I'll say Matt has the lime version of this, which is head and shoulders above. I agree. I just thought it would be unfair to bring that to the I agree. I agree because we're trying to go beer flavor beer, right? I will give this a solid 3-5. I don't think that I can go all the way to four, which is the highest score is doled out today. Well, my but I would give this a 3-5.
Big ZMy problem is I would drink this over the Peronis. Honestly. But I don't think I would drink it over the Corona.
RobOne, to be fair, I scored the Peroni three and I score scored the uh Corona four. So three five is right. Yes. Listen, Peroni, Corona. Peroni three. Corona four. Why three five?
ChrisZ, why would you say you would drink this over the Peroni?
Big ZYou know, I think it's my love of offensive linemen. Hey. I'm just gonna be honest here. I'm not necessarily sure it tastes better than the Peroni.
ChrisThere you go. I'll accept it. I'm not I'm not here.
Big ZI'm not here to pander.
ChrisUh I mean, you kind of are then pandering to the offensive lineman. Shut up, Chris. Shut up. Uh but I'll allow it.
Big ZYeah, I'll allow it.
ChrisYeah. The pandering allowed.
Big ZAll right. Well, I mean, that's a that's a fair call out, though. I you're not wrong. No, but I again I'm always scared.
ChrisI would say I would drink this over the peeroni because it's probably hipper. So, like if you want to be not a a quote unquote pretentious beer drinker, I'm not about to bring a six-pack of Peroni to the the cookout, right? So garage beer, good beer. Not offensive to me.
Big ZI don't think it's terrible. No. I would drink a ton of them.
RobYeah. I can I can I be bold and say bold, bold most beer pongiest beer we've drank all day.
Big ZOh yeah, 100%.
MattOh, this one, yeah.
Rob100%. Like like like if I was if I was pulling this out of cups during Pong.
Big ZIt has better flavor than some of the beers we had on the table. Chris is right.
ChrisLowest ABV so far.
Big ZIt's only four percent.
ChrisWhat is it? Four?
Big ZFour.
ChrisOkay. Even more, even better suited than for bad. Z, what are you giving this?
Big ZI'll match Peroni then. I think it's only fair.
ChrisA four? Damn. Which is lower than Corona for you. Corona was four five for you.
Big ZYeah, no, that's that's accurate.
ChrisOkay, so a four.
Big ZI think I think if I had to drink beer, Chris, I'd choose a Corona over seven.
RobSo we are at 7-5 at the moment.
ChrisRob, what you got?
RobNo, we're at a I was at I said three five. Oh, you're at 3-5.
ChrisI'm I'm a three on this. That makes it 10. Uh 10. 10-5. 10-5. Matt, what are you going with the uh garage beer?
RobHe's going to ten. Two five. He's going five. Fifteen five. We are at the highest score now with garage.
ChrisThe Welser scale, it's an enigma. Nobody knows it. No rhyme or reason to it.
Big ZI hate every single one of you equally as much. I think the lime version of this is way better.
ChrisOh, yeah. We've got to try this.
Big ZI just want to be very honest with everybody, but I just feel like to come to a table with non-fruited beers. See here's the thing, I think it would be unfair.
MattIt's the same price that's the same price as the regular garage beer, but it flights much higher.
Big ZIt's just underwhelming. The garage beer is underwhelming? Yeah, for what I thought it was going to be, yeah, it's underwhelming. Much like the Corona, I thought it was going to take the corona and be like, that's a winner. That's a winner. That's going to be a winner. I thought it would be my corona and garage beer going on neck and neck through this.
RobWe have a table full of mediocrities. Listen, I mean, that's kind of the point of this, though, right? Yeah.
Big ZLike that's what we were trying to do. But I was looking for a better budget beer, right? And I'm not sure garage beer, in and of itself, without the lime, gets you to where you're going. And I'll I'll say this as well.
RobI think that this episode has opened my eyes about the first episode. Lion's Head had so much more flavor than anything we've tasted today. Silly head and shoulders above anything we've tasted today.
Big ZLion's Head was a complex beer. None of these beers hit the complexity.
ChrisThe Garage beer, I think points per cost is probably gonna be the highest.
Big ZOh really?
ChrisNow the Modello might change our minds.
Big ZLet's do I have the most expensive beer to the table?
ChrisNo, no, no, no, no. I'm just saying you you do have the most expensive beer with that chorus. The Banquet Beer. But Garage was 0.106. So it's like not the cheapest, not the most expensive. It's kind of in the middle.
Big ZGotcha.
ChrisBut has scored pretty well.
Big ZSo I mean, I don't think it's terrible. No, no, it's what we've had in the table. It's definitely up there.
ChrisIt worked well.
Big ZI think the crone is better.
ChrisOh my god. We almost had another disaster, but Rob saved it. No, we're good. Yeah,
Modelo Finally Tastes Like Beer
Chriswe're good.
RobAlright. Guys, we're we're gonna move on to the last beer of the day. Modelo Especial 1925. It's a cerveza out of Mexico, which is uh Mexico for those of you who don't speak English. Um 4.4 ABV. And I think that this is gonna be interesting to compare to Corona. Christopher, here you are. Sorry, thank you. You're welcome. Michael, you good here?
Big ZAbsolutely, sir.
ChrisAll right.
Big ZI ain't no bitch.
ChrisThis is the most different smelling beer of the day.
Big ZI mean, it's got notes, folks.
MattIt's more than one. It has a nose, which is much more than we've had so far. Wow. There's a smell to this.
Big ZLet's see what happens. Here we go. Cheers, gentlemen.
RobCheers. Damn.
Big ZUh-oh. Beer.
RobLadies and gentlemen, beer. We've arrived at beer.
Big ZI it took this long. Is this episode's lion's head?
RobGood lord. It could be.
Big ZNow listen, of course. I mean, I don't think that it could be. This is it. Yeah. This is out of out. What we've had on the table, this is this is the beer.
RobI'm gonna say this, okay? Best beer of this episode, but I I do want to commend you for the lion's head choice of last episode because I would still say Lion's Head, who had Lion's Head last episode? Kristen, yeah.
Big ZI've thought I've thought about bringing bringing lions. I drink Lion's head.
RobStill above this beer, in my opinion.
Big ZBut out of these is without having them next to each other, I can't make that statement.
RobWell, I think Lion's Head has a very more distinct lager flavor. This is not just a little lager to me.
MattThis is beer flavored beer. This has a depth to it that the other ones did not.
Big ZYeah. I would like to have a I'm going six.
MattYou know, on six.
Big ZI'm going six.
RobI'd go six.
MattI'm going six.
RobEverybody is six. Six times four, twenty-four. Leaps and bounds. The seller sip. Math. E. Not the button I thought we were gonna hit.
Science SoundWe're talking about numbers.
RobI tried to predict what button you were gonna hit, but that is that was math.
MattHow much did you pay for this one? Is this budget beer?
RobWell, I feel like this fits. I think it was $12.99 for the six-pack, I believe, is what I paid for it.
ChrisSo I I just pulled because uh Tanzos had 24 ounces of this as well. Okay, so I just used that cost. This is the same as the Corona and the Peroni. Then it it it fits. So I hate that it fits, but continue. Points per cost. So, like what we scored it versus the cost of it. Go on. This crushed everything.
Big ZYeah, I'm not surprised actually. Woo!
Chris195. Uh, the next up would have been garage beer at 145. So a big brick flair listened to our podcast. Yeah. I just hit you with a woo. I don't have every beer's ABVs, and by every I mean specifically the two beers Matt brought don't have ABV printed on their pins.
MattPatently false, hold on.
ChrisSo I disqualify them just immediately because of that. Points per ABV, Modello also crushes, crushes. The next up would be both the garage and the corona.
RobSo yeah, I mean Modelo just slayed a little under the average ABV. I think most stuff was at five.
ChrisThis is four four. Yeah, we we had a lot at five and a lot in the fours. Again, don't know about Utica or Iron City, but the other three in in round one were fives. Yeah, you can look at it. Four four is a median. Uh-huh. And then Corona 4-6, Garage 4, Odello 4-4.
MattUtica Club is five, Iron City is 4.7.
RobSo nothing nothing above five this episode, which which I think is is pretty cool.
Big ZI mean for a budget beer, I think that's what the way it looks like.
RobI think that's pretty standard.
Big ZThis episode we had a couple 40s that were running in here.
MattUntil you get into the crafts and the IPAs. Five is average. That's average score for beer. What is Yingling?
RobIs Yingling five? I believe it's 4-7. 4-7. Okay.
MattChris, give us the final scores. Suspense here. Let's hear who the winner is. Suspense.
Final Rankings And The Winner
ChrisIn order of worst to best, shittiest to least shittiest. Let's go. Core's Banquet, 3.5, terrible. Iron City, pretty terrible at a 7. Foster's at a 10. Utica at a 12. Both uh affected by the Welser scale, I'll just point out. And whoa. Garage Beer at a 15.5. Corona at a 16.5. Uh oh wait, I skipped over Peroni at a 13. But the winner at a 24, Modello. No contest, bitches.
MattRob Staley's Modello.
RobThank you. Stellar Sandy. I will bask in that until I have to pee very badly. Which is right now. Yeah, I was gonna say it was immediately. I hope you all have a great day.
MattThanks for listening. It's been something.
