Booze Battle - "Anime Characters and Cocktails"
Sparkly moonlight, cotton candy clouds, and a snap of flame—our Anime Booze Battle brings big fandom energy to the bar. We have each crafted original cocktails inspired by Sailor Moon, One Piece’s Gear Five Luffy, Fullmetal Alchemist’s Roy Mustang, and a nod to Sword Art Online’s Black Swordsman Kazuto Kirigaya. Then was argue, laugh, and debate our way to a winner.
First up, Sailor Moon gets a radiant makeover with a yuzu-forward gin and tonic. Empress Gin brings the purple hue, edible glitter channels that iconic transformation sequence, and a dash of lavender-rosemary bitters balances the citrus. We swap stories about how Sailor Moon shaped pop culture, and why it remains a welcoming gateway for newcomers without losing depth.
Then we sail into One Piece. Gear Five Luffy inspires a dessert-like cocktail with vanilla vodka, Malibu, triple sec, soda, and a cotton candy cloud crowned by a handcrafted straw-hat garnish. We break down what makes Luffy’s world so enduring: devil fruit lore, “adventure-first” pacing, and that polarizing yet brilliant Looney Tunes elasticity of Gear Five. It’s a sugar rush with substance—joy as rebellion and resilience.
Things heat up with Roy Mustang. A classic Fireball and RumChata shot nods to snap-born flame and the moral weight at the heart of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. We dig into equivalent exchange, war, and redemption, and why Brotherhood’s tight storytelling and character arcs stick the landing.
Finally, we pour a dark, smooth SAO-inspired sip—Kahlúa, vanilla vodka, and a splash of cola—to capture the tension between quiet life and hero’s duty in a VR world where death has real stakes.
By the close, we crown the cocktail champion for presentation, flavor, and thematic flair, If you love anime, mixology, or both, you’ll leave with new recipes, fresh watchlist ideas, and a smile. Subscribe, share this episode with your favorite fan, and tell us: which anime would you drink to next?

We have lift off.
Rob:Welcome to Matt and Friends Drink the Universe.
Matt:Welcome back everyone to Matt and Friends Drink the Universe. The theme for today is Booze Battle, and we are talking anime characters. Woo!
Various:I have some great John! Cue!
Matt:It's over 9,000. I have some great friends drinking the universe with me again today, and hopefully we'll all survive this episode. We're gonna go this way down the couch. So next to me, right now, is Napa. Hello, friends. It's Rob.
Siobhan:Hello, it's Siobhan. And it's Krista.
Matt:It's been a little bit since we did a booze battle, and we brought a variety of anime characters to this. And we have some great drinks prepared as well. And I'm gonna let Siobhan go first because her and Krista kind of above and beyond in what is going on here drink-wise. So everything looks incredible. It really does. No surprise the ladies went for it. Yeah, right. Mine is still in bottles. Yours is at least poured. Mine is unpoured.
Christa:Well, Siobhan and I understood the assignment. Clearly. Clearly, clearly.
Siobhan:Okay, so if I'm going first, what do you got? I chose the character Sailor Moon.
Matt:And I'm going with Sailor Moon.
Siobhan:So the actual Usagi, yes, Usagi Tsucino from Sailor Moon. So the titular character. I know everybody makes a joke. Titul. Titular character from Sailor Moon.
Rob:Was she a pianist?
Siobhan:She was not.
Rob:Titular pianist.
Siobhan:Get the fuck out of here. Correct. So the drink.
Christa:First of all, she's the moon princess out here to save the universe. So shut the hell up.
Siobhan:Princess Serenity, if you will.
Rob:Oh my god. She's awesome. Tuxedo mask.
Christa:Yeah. I had such a huge crush on tuxedo mask. This smells so floral.
Rob:I'm so concerned.
Siobhan:So it's actually not, but more citrus.
Rob:The nose on it is lavender.
Siobhan:So here's what's up. It looks pretty. It's very pretty. It's like purple and glittery. It is purple. It is glittery. It is a yuzu gin and tonic for all intents and purposes. Okay. It is has glitter.
Rob:So it has For those of you who don't know, Yuzu is a Japanese citrus fruit.
Siobhan:Yes. Shivano had experience at Wegmans, apparently. Yeah, yes, I did. It is a Yuzu juice with a little bit of an Asian pear sake. Normally it calls for Yuzu sake, but that's being delivered tomorrow to my home. And so we were a day late, so I found an Asian pear sake. A day late, a buck short. Right.
Rob:I'm writing the report.
Siobhan:It has the Empress Gin, which for anybody that doesn't know is the purple gin that you can buy that has uh butterfly in it. It looks awesome. That's purple. Yeah, Empress is awesome. I love that. Um lovely gin. Also uh lime and yuzu fever tree, if we're gonna call out a brand, but lime and yuzu seltzer. And it's just a delightful citrusy time. And then I I did put a little bit of lavender rosemary bitters on the top, but only a dash for each.
Various:Oh, just on the top. Why is there sparkly shit in here?
Siobhan:So there's glitter in there because it's Salem! Yeah, come on, I'm gonna see sparkles later today. You might you're welcome to do that. I'm highly concerned about the parking.
Rob:Oh wow, now I really see them. Yeah. Okay. I'm I'm going in for a taste.
Christa:Oh, it's fabulous. Refreshing. It's very it's very like I could drink this on a hot summer day. Ref thank you.
Rob:I absolutely hate gin and tonic. I can drink this. This is not that tonic, yeah.
Christa:No, they really don't taste the tonic in that. I got it.
Rob:It covers the awfulness of the gin, in my opinion. Okay, come on now, come on now.
Siobhan:I like gin. That's fair.
Rob:We have not had a good thing.
Siobhan:The yuzu juice, the yuzu juice, I think helps. Here's my problem.
Rob:I don't like things that taste floral, and I feel like all gin tastes floral.
Christa:You're right. Well, it is like heavy on botanical. Like how twist made, right? Yeah, exactly.
Rob:And it's just not my my taste. But but this, the extra citrus, makes it quite lovely.
Siobhan:I like it a lot. Well, it's full of empathy and heart, just like Sailor Moon herself.
Various:And it'll punish you later.
Siobhan:Like Sailor Moon. And uh yes, yeah, she will punish you. She will punish you. She will punish you.
Christa:What? Love and justice.
Rob:Oh, there you go.
Siobhan:Correct. That's why I kind of chose her. Her whole jam is that Sailor Moon is powerful, right? Like if anyone has watched the Sailor Moon anime, but um, it's really powerful in general. There's many other Sailor Guardians that are not more powerful, but like very powerful. Like there's a different power for there's, I mean, name all the planets, right? Like they all have a Sailor Guardian, but Sailor Saturn is like an increase. Yeah, that's one. Yep. Um, but Sailor Saturn, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Venus, Sailor Mars. Yes, they all have their own sort of unique power.
Matt:Powers combined, and you get Captain Planet.
Siobhan:Well, we yeah, we made a Captain Planet joke the other day, actually. It was funny. He was because Chris was like, Oh yeah, is it one of them heart as like a joke? And I was like, that's kind of Sailor Moon, though.
Rob:No.
Siobhan:Because like, but her whole thing.
Rob:Didn't she have like like banner? Um, like when she was doing her transformation, you know, like they do the ribbon dancers, like the ribbons. She doesn't have ribbons. No, but no, no, she has hair.
Various:Because she has the bond and then like the pigtails.
Christa:They're pigtails from yeah, yeah. But Sailor Moon transformation is such a huge impact on pop culture. They they spoof it in it. Everything.
Siobhan:It's Sailor Moon, just as a manga as an anime, like, is really, really iconic. Sailor Moon.
Christa:So the pop culture, I mean, you see it in like shit on Cartoon Network, you see it in like comedy movies, like Underpuff Girl. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, it's it's a good thing.
Matt:Oh, yeah, they got they got bought in the biggest or whatever. Yeah, it's a joke. I do remember though, this was like the first anime, like Sailor Moon was the first one to break break out on Cartoon Network. Yes. And I remember it was something different in the animation style. And I remember watching it and going, Oh, this is cool.
Rob:This is like this is really cool because it was like the the Japanese animation style that we were seeing for the first time. Yeah, and the dub.
Siobhan:The funny part about it, right, is like, so right now, which is when we're recording, um, you can watch it streaming through Viz, which Viz did a different dub. So, like, part of the reason I chose Sailor Moon is because it's just media. Well, you can watch it on Hulu, but Viz Media is like the group that did the dubbing. Oh, yeah, it's like Funimation or like any other type of. But the reason I chose Sailor Moon is because I grew up the anime came out in like the in like 1992 or 91. And so I was like in grade school and I would watch this coming home after school all the time. And the dubbed version that I watched on TV, which was kind of the Toonami, was different than the dubbing I can watch now. And so they all have different names than they did in the dubbed version that I watched, which is kind of cool, and also it's just interesting because you like watch the different dubbing and you've got to do that.
Rob:You mean because Pluto's not a planet anymore? They got rid of it. Wow.
Siobhan:Pluto's not even so there's so many scenes. I know, no, I know. It's a fair enough question. No, but it's cool to to now re-watch it as an adult and be like, oh yeah, like I remember this, like when I was a kid watching this and being like, oh yeah, it's so cool.
Matt:But this also this preceded, so this, like I said before, and I'm repeating myself, but this was the first, and then Dragon Ball came after. And I feel like Dragon Ball was the big breakout, and everybody was like, Oh, this is pretty cool. Yeah, this this started it all, and I appreciated it. Was they're mostly good stories that wrapped up in 25 minutes or less.
Various:And it's can I just say yeah, oh, sorry, this drink is great for it.
Siobhan:It's a great drink. Thank you.
Rob:It yeah, you're yay.
Siobhan:I'm glad. I'm also glad, Rob, that you actually enjoy it.
Rob:More than one sip of this is good.
Christa:It is good. I'm actually gonna steal this from you and drink this in the summer.
Matt:I will send all the I'll put the recipe in there. This particular gin is one of my favorites. Yeah, it's a good one. I love the amateur. With tonic, it changes colors. Which to me, as a colorblind guy, is kind of funny because I can see blowing colors.
Siobhan:Well, it's purple, but if you put tonic in, it turns pink. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And with the glitter in here, it's a fun color changey type. It's a little titration. Yeah, so good times. I love Sailor Moon, and yeah, it was iconic from my childhood.
Rob:Quick moment to talk about what that brought back for me, which was when uh Dragon Ball Z used to air on Toonami, and they hadn't gotten through enough episodes in the dub, so they would get to a point and then they just restart from the beginning.
Matt:Oh god, it was awful.
Siobhan:No! Oh yeah.
Matt:Episode four were starting over.
Siobhan:Oh no, it was only that many.
Matt:It was legit, like they would get to the point where I'm sorry, I didn't steal your thunder. No, you're fine. Where Goku died, and like by the whole Piccolo thing, him and Raditz go down, and then they'd be like, next time on Dragon Ball, and they'd set it up for the next episode.
Siobhan:And then you were like, just kidding back to the end.
Matt:They were like, just kidding, Raditz is coming to Earth, and you're like, No, wait a second.
Rob:No, but they would they would just start it from the beginning. Yeah, it would wrap it up. So like, oh my god.
Siobhan:That's crazy. Yeah, yeah.
Rob:Um, this makes me want to get the monga. I I almost went with a Dragon Ball Z character for today, which is the first time. I was surprised that you didn't spoil it. I thought you were. But um, well, it we'll talk about why I didn't, but uh, but had I gone with that, my uh my drink would have been a lot heftier than what it is today because I was gonna do something called a spirit bomb.
Various:Oh, you told me uh you told me.
Rob:Where I was gonna have like a blue shot that we were gonna drop into a larger bucket of also liquor. Nice and then shoot. We have to do that another time.
Matt:Yes, bucket. Yes. You're speaking by language.
Siobhan:I feel like we're the four of us here are like very niche on all of this because like as much as there's a lot of nerd culture in the groups of like the people that do this podcast, and anime is not like a big piece of everybody else's kind of thing.
Christa:Also, I feel like we all watch very different anime.
Siobhan:Which I love because there's such like a variety, and I feel like we're a good mix because like I think the characters, because I know spoiler alert, who our characters are, that I think we have a good variety at this. Because like anime is so different across different types, and like I think it's just a good intro for people. Like, if you don't watch anime or like you're kind of only mildly interested, like Sailor Moon is literally like everybody watching level. But like not for not because it doesn't have depth, but because it's just like easy watching, easy to get into. It's not combat heavy, like there's like there's different kinds of anime too, and like you know, there's like they do like a girl version, kind of whatever for lack of a better term, of just like, you know, oh, it's about like romantic stuff and like women being like superheroes, and then there's like dude ones where it's like combat and like stuff like that. Oh, yeah, so many different kinds.
Christa:Yeah, oh, haiku, blue volleyball, even like Slam Dunk is which is so cool like that. But um, I think Sailor Moon is one of the first shows that I can think of that is like shows in general that have like an all-female cast, which led a lot of way for um like earlier 2000 cartoons, like pop-up girls, totally spies, like stuff like that, Winx Club and Bratz and all that other kind, all that other good stuff.
Matt:I think also set the animation style because and I don't know where they fall, and if somebody wants to blow me up, that's fine. But like um Gundam came out and it's it's a very similar animation style. And I remember it's just Japanese animation style at anything. It is, but but the line work and things like that. If you look at yes, I see what you're saying, but those two stuck out as being very early and very similar. And I was a big Gundam fan. I actually have one of the DVDs sitting over the uh the endless waltz is somewhere in my DVD collection over there.
Christa:It's fabulous to look at different um anime styles because something like Neon Genesis looks incredibly different from something like Full Money Alchemist. Looks so different. Yeah, yeah.
Siobhan:Right, ghost in the shell kind of like movie stuff where you're like, oh wait, this is like a next level, like future five.
Christa:And there's like and there's like stuff for everyone. Like Akira um was a pioneer. Like they made new colors in animation for Akira. Like, like they're and like the yeah, it's actually Akira, Akira like did such fabulous work on their coloring and stuff. Like they literally made new shades of colors for the Akira movie. It's very cool. And then the Akira slide on the motorcycle was sniffed in a million different things. Matt is ship. You got shit.
Matt:I am sad. I finished this cocktail. Maybe that is a good idea. It is a good thing. Don't be sad as my friend.
Siobhan:Oh, Rob's gonna hand you his. He had three sips and now he's good. Mr. I like this cocktail. I'm not offended. Don't worry. I didn't know. Sailor Moon has a lot of empathy. So she's out here for love and peace. But what this means, you know, I think, is that Krista, you should talk about your drink.
Rob:Yes, yeah. Your character.
Matt:What do we got here?
Siobhan:This isn't happening.
Rob:Hang on one moment. I I need I need to understand.
Siobhan:I took a picture so well.
Rob:Well, tell me how to do this before I drink it.
Matt:Well, we're gonna hold on a minute. I gotta I gotta jump in here because I we took a picture earlier, and I know nothing about the anime. I know what she's gonna talk about, but I looked at this picture. And with that little hat, I was like, Madeline exploded, but keep going.
Siobhan:Madeline, fair enough. She's in a cloud in France. I do love Madeline. Madeline was fabulous. France smog. So Jim Apel. Jim Apel smog. Yeah. We love her bad. Jim Apel smog. She's smoking like every other French girl. Uh for real. So just kidding, everybody.
Christa:So mine is one piece. I did Gear Fiver Luffy. I call this drink Gear Five. One piece spoilers for episode 1071. Dear God, been there. Will not get there. I know exactly what you're talking about. I'm already too old to ever get there, baby.
Matt:100%. I'm right there with you. Keep going.
Christa:So, so the drink that I have is triple sec, vanilla vodka, and Malibu topped with spray. And I have a little cotton candy garnish. I like to put the cotton candy like directly in and like do a little, do a little stir and have it dissolve. And the the hat on top is a straw hat, which is part of Luffy's um identity. Their pirate crew is called the Straw Hat Pirates. But yeah, I hope you guys like it. I did give this to my sister who is notoriously picky for alcohol, and she loved it. So it's Maria approved.
Siobhan:Okay, it smells fabulous.
Rob:Wow.
Siobhan:Oh my god, yeah. Okay, I love it. It's great. It's very orange, cream sickly. Yeah. I'll be honest. The continuous. Oh god. Yeah.
Matt:We're gonna post exact recipes for all this.
Christa:So we need to know what's up here. Yeah, Siobhan and I really went all effort levels.
Matt:Rob, do you just want to give up now? You and I will call it a day. Oh, you guys can say I'm like, again, the MDBs and stuff.
Siobhan:It's okay, guys. You brought things. I can't even so good.
Various:It really is.
Siobhan:I think we already maybe know the winner, but that's okay. Wait, wait, but tell me more. Can we talk about One Piece a little bit if we have time? Absolutely. Because I am not as familiar. I know what it is, but I'm not super familiar, so I'd love to know more. Sure.
Christa:So One Piece is widely regarded as one of the most watched animes. It's been on since 1999. I don't think so many episodes. It is, I think they're so they're on a hiatus right now. Um the manga is still ongoing. But they they're on hiatus. I think their last episode was 1126, maybe something like that. So they have been going for a long time. Um so Luffy uh is his goal is to become King of the Pirates. That's his goal. So he is a pirate. Um and his so real quick, sorry.
Rob:Go on. For all of the non-One Piecers out there, One Piece in general is I'm more of a two-piece guy, but keep going.
Siobhan:Okay.
Rob:Thanks, ass. Well, anyway, when One Piece in general is a pirate adventure.
Christa:Yes, yes. It is that's like it is very much adventure-based. Like they they are on a pirate ship run. I just wanted to give like a very concise. Yes, yeah.
Rob:Now, now continuing, sorry.
Christa:So so Luffy uh is gathering his pirate crew, and then they are going to sail the Grand Line, which is like the dangerous ocean, so that he can find the alleged one piece. The alleged one piece says, you know, if you find it, you will become king of the pirates. So that's the gist of the goal of the show.
Rob:So the one piece is a treasure.
Siobhan:Does anyone ever find it in 1100 episodes so far?
Rob:So hold on, hold on. The one piece. So goal D. Roger is the original king of the pirates. And as he learns that he's dying, he tells people, like before he gets to the road.
Christa:Like he's like he's gonna get executed.
Rob:So he says He goes, you know, I left my treasure. And if you find it is so you know worthy of whatever the person who finds this will be the next king of the pirates.
Christa:Cool. And and there's like a lot of lore with Joy Boy, etc., that like leads up into that stuff, too. But that's that's that's a little that's a good one.
Siobhan:Well, I mean Sailor Moon is similar and it has a ton of lore because like again, it's been around for a while. Yeah, exactly. I don't know that they have well honestly, I'm re-watching like the first season and I'm on episode 45. It's the first season, and maybe we're almost done.
Matt:Holy crap!
Siobhan:So, like and there's like five or six seasons, so it's a fair amount. Yeah, because you got Sailor Moon S. Oh, yeah, those are all like the names of the same. And then there's Sailor Moon Crystal, which is the one Sailor Moon just released in like 2013, I think, to like be a redo or whatever. I can't, but you know, adding new options.
Rob:I don't know.
Siobhan:Yeah.
Rob:Sorry, how much alcohol is in this versus soda?
Christa:Um, it's probably like this much alcohol, this much soda.
Matt:So hold your fingers right now. It's more like a third and two. This is this is Krista's comparison of alcohol to soda ratio. Well, it's like what's in here.
Rob:Yeah. Is it like mostly triple sec or is it like mostly triple? No, it's drum.
Christa:It's equal parts, Malibu, triple sec, and vanilla vodka.
Rob:So there's three shots. There's like three shots worth of trick. Two shots worth of stuff that I care about. The triple sec is not.
Christa:You don't care about the triple sec?
Rob:No, it's not gonna do anything.
Christa:No, but it gives its nice orange fleece. Oh, it's legit asking. So that is too drunk. Oh, what a fun job we decided. Going back to One Piece lore, does that even get to gear five yet? So um Luffy is a rubber boy. He has his a rubber man. Well, he's 17 at the beginning. He's a boy. And then he's 19. He's a boy. Um, but he uh has eaten the devil fruit, which is like the power of the show. Um devil's fruit. Rob also ate the double fruit. That's why it's the devil fruit fruit. Yeah, there's there's a lot of variety of devil fruits, and they give you powers um depending on what the devil fruit is.
Rob:There's logia type, paramecia type, there's paramecia type, Zoan type, and if you want to be technical, and then mythical Zoen type. Mythical Zoe and then the legendary, the god type.
Christa:That's that's mythical, that's classified as mythical type.
Siobhan:Anime has nothing but time. Yeah, real.
Christa:Let me let me quickly, let me, let me, let me quickly get into why the cotton candy was involved. Although um for real.
Matt:I love cotton candy.
Christa:But so um if I wanted to just leave it at that, I'd be like, oh my god, Chopper, he loves cotton candy. But um, so when Luffy uh is honing his skills um with his um gum gum fruit, uh you know, he gets you know gear one, two, three, and four, which are different like power-ups for his, but gear five was one that is like a god type power-up, and he gets this like rubber hose animation type thing. It looks like Looney Tunes, it's really cool looking. Some people hate it. I love it. I thought it was so fun and whimsical. You mean like animation type? Yeah, like animation type. It goes, it goes from being like like one piece is very like, it looks kind of like Sailor Moon, where it's like has that like oldish quality to it, like 90s quality to it. Well, I would assume if they have 11 houses. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, they've been around since like 1999. Yeah. But like it's nothing like um spectacular animation-wise, but then when they go to like gear five level, he gets this like whimsical, bouncy, cloudy aesthetic to it. Um, so you know, his his hair turns white and cloudy, and he gets this like ring of clouds around him, and he basically says, like, this is my peak, like I have reached God status. And so that's uh why I have that cotton candy. Yeah, the cotton candy cloud with his sun god. He's a sun god Nika. The sun god Nika. It's it's incredibly cool with the lore. So I love that. Yeah, that's that's the uh that's the cotton candy lore.
Matt:I love how you baked it in. I really do because this this drink is nuanced. It's lovely. Everybody on this podcast knows that I prefer things that are sickeningly sweet and pure sugar.
Siobhan:Well, but it's not though. Like I think it has a good it's got a good, it does have a good value.
Rob:Yes, correct. Oh, yeah.
Siobhan:I mean, I'm still drinking it, but yes.
Various:In other words, pour another one.
Siobhan:Let's put some glitter in it. Yeah, put some glitter in it. Just kidding. It doesn't need to be.
Christa:Add glitter. No, um, but yeah, I uh I was practicing it at home, and my sister was like, This is awesome. I was great. This is she's like, this is going in my regular repertoire of drinks. I said, Thank you, girls. There you go. I'm glad that you all like it.
Matt:I'm gonna have you send me the recipe for this because we're gonna publish it.
Christa:I have a little more in my water bottle if you if you want another one.
Matt:I I've been seriously contemplating a Matt and Friends drink the universe like drink book. Very cute. Yeah. A little mixology book that we are like a fun thing. We go back through all the crap that we've put together, and some of it has been really great, and mine have been really awful. Yeah, most of them have been really good.
Various:One of them is gonna be add worm.
Siobhan:Yeah, well we'll make sure everybody that we stop Matt from adding his own stuff to the book. We'll just I'll be an editor on that. There you go. Siobhan's gonna prove for me. I literally an editor by trade, so I will make sure.
Rob:Today, my character comes from an anime that was recommended by a very good friend of mine who's sitting clearly two seeds.
Siobhan:One of us two seeds. And I I love this anime. It's one of my favorites. My cat over there. It's not Ziva.
Rob:No, no, no. It's not Ziva. No, no, no, no. It's this anime is so. My dear friend Krista uh has been on me to watch Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood for a long time. I I recently started it and I have about 10 episodes left to finish it. Um, and my drink is based off the character of Roy Mustang.
Christa:My love of my life.
Rob:Oh, Colonel Colonel Roy Mustang.
Christa:It might be it might be worth to note that you've seen the original 03 version.
Rob:No, no, it gets me every time. Yeah, yeah.
Christa:Well, I have the manga of this.
Rob:Roy Mustang is, I believe, the only surviving fire alchemist.
Christa:Well, surviving is a strong word, but it makes it sound like they were all killed off, which is not the case.
Rob:No, no, no, but the but the last guy who knew how to do it, his teacher, who like passed on the knowledge by tattooing it on his daughter's back, might I add.
Christa:Not cool. Not cool. That's crazy. Well, the re well, and also the reason why Roy is the last flame alchemist is because Reza asked he wants to be the last one. Correct. Like he it's it's too dangerous to let it fall.
Various:I know.
Christa:No, I'm just saying the way the way you said it, the way you said it made it seem like it was like Avatar Last Airbender, where they were all killed off. And I was like, that is a good one. We need a version two of this as well. Would you consider Avatar an anime? Oh would you think of it? I would. I would. Yes. So I feel like it's borderline for some people.
Siobhan:For the for the purpose of this podcast, I think we would be fine to say that. And Avatar's foul is cool.
Various:Okay.
Matt:I will say also Mark Hamill's performance at the end of that as Fire Lord Ozai is freaking menacing.
Rob:Everybody is shitting on my time right now. No.
Christa:Sorry, are you not?
Rob:No, we're just going to be able to do that. I was trying to be talking about it. I was talking about my man Roy Mustang. Trying to get to my drink, and everybody's talking about avatars.
Siobhan:Does he also have a fragile ego?
Rob:Yes.
Siobhan:Wow, good to know. Let's segue into that. Tell us about that.
Christa:Tell us about Roy.
Rob:Wowzers. Yeah. Wowsers.
Siobhan:The empathy went out the window, and I'm now a warrior who will punish you. Go ahead. The sailor man.
Rob:Some people pay extra for that. Anyway. They should. That's a catchphrase. Um, so my drink today is technically a Captain Crunch shot. Or a cinnamon toast crunch. Sorry. Cinnamon Toast Crunch shot. Um, so it is uh fireball and rum chata 50-50.
Various:A classic. I'm choosing.
Rob:But uh, you know, uh, he's the last flame alchemist or the only flame alchemist. So uh fireball, flames, here we go. To your health.
Matt:Lovely. Yeah.
Christa:Fabulous.
Matt:We got some cinnamon happiness in there.
Christa:I feel like uh I feel like a cinnamon toaster crunch shot is always a good thing. Have you ever had a honey nut Cheerio shot?
Rob:I I have not.
Christa:I would do it. It's uh it's uh the Jack Daniels honey with rum chata.
Rob:I would have liked this. I would have liked this over a little bit of ice.
Christa:Yes, cool down.
Rob:And I may or may not have, because I wasn't measuring, uh put a little bit too much fireball in mine. I don't, I was I was it's very cinnamony. Oh yeah, yeah. But it's good. Well, well, too to be fair, it goes back.
Christa:Um Roy Roy like canonically loves drinking like whiskey and stuff like that. So I feel like I feel like it works. This was true to your characters.
Rob:Yes, it was it was it was maybe not true to Rob, true to the characters. No, no, no. I like whiskey. Yeah. Oh no, no, no.
Siobhan:I just mean like if you were saying that you wanted it to be different.
Rob:No, I mean I just I didn't measure it, is what I was saying. Mine tasted like more mine tasted almost all of fireball.
Christa:I'm a fan. Mine tasted more on the rum chata side, but I I enjoy it. I enjoy it.
Rob:I had an uneven the palsy pour going on. I mean oh yeah.
Siobhan:Well, you are the last surviving version of whatever you are, so it's cool. Yeah, so you know. Hold on.
Matt:This is what this podcast is built on. Uh oh. Please elaborate on the palsy pour. Tell that story of where it comes from.
Rob:Do it right now. One of our good friends, Mike Weber, was married in the grand year of 2014. And that's it.
Christa:I was there. I graduated high school that year. Gross.
Rob:I hate you.
Matt:You know what? For rubbing rubbing at the hell and drink something.
Siobhan:I don't know if I agree with that. There's literally people that exist that are younger than us. So that's fine.
Rob:Continue the story.
Siobhan:As the oldest person, it's okay.
Rob:At Mike and Katie's wedding. Hi, Mike and Katie.
Siobhan:Loved your wedding. It was great. It was a good one. I don't think you listen, but it's something bad.
Rob:You do. No, it's not bad at all. No, it's not. There was just an older woman behind the bar. There were there were two bartending.
Various:Like bartending. Okay.
Rob:Okay. One of them was an older woman, and she clearly was having a shaking issue. And because of that, all of her drinks were a little bit heavier because of the shaky tore.
Christa:That wasn't on purpose, bro. Right.
Rob:It was not on purpose. How do you know that? She was having a time.
Christa:I went to a wedding uh uh earlier last year, and the girl behind the bar said, Girl, I love your dress. I said, Thank you so much. She said, I'm gonna give you a little bit more than a double. I said for looking good. Girl, you might have to have a people. Shaky hand. I think she just had a heavy hand.
Rob:So anyway, Roy Mustang at the snap of a finger can create fire.
Siobhan:Right.
Rob:And he is the uh the hero of uh the Ishvalan Civil War. Quote unquote. Quote unquote.
Siobhan:Hero is a I mean, yes, but Full Metal Alchemist has one of the most intricate storylines of like I I would say an anime that's like come over here that like we can watch that's like easily accessible here in America. It's such a like to me, it's it makes me think of almost like a full like feature film that's that's kind of like a level.
Christa:I mean and I know I know you haven't finished it, but like it is letting it the live don't watch live action. Well, no, no, no.
Rob:I won't live what no. They make like the knockoff live actions in in like Japan or Korea.
Various:I feel like the depth of the storyline is so good.
Christa:The the ending is so cyclic, like you watch it, it feels so completed.
Rob:Brotherhood is on Hulu for all those who want to watch it. So is Sailor Moon. It's also on Hulu. So it's very appropriate. Again, yes. Yeah, it's very easy to do. I I almost totally total. Oh, okay, great. That's it. So like basically that's how many are in the first season of Sailor Moon. Just so you know, I believe that Netflix is is reissuing One Piece animated called The One Piece. And it is shorter. They're going to take out all the filler arcs and literally just give you a few.
Christa:I don't want to say I don't want to be that person, but in the grand scheme of bummer, on the grand scheme of One Piece, they really don't have that much filler. It's just that they drag on for episodes and episodes on the same arc that is vital to the plot. Right. But like stuff like Arlong, no, like like Arlong Park being like 30 episodes could be done in like six. Well, like they did for the live action. Well, exactly, exactly. But but saying that it's true, like filler, like there's like five or six episodes between arcs where they do whatever, they really don't have that much filler. Like Naruto has more filler than One Piece in terms of percentage.
Rob:I just finished Naruto.
Christa:Like Naruto Shapuden or Naruto uh regular, yeah. Is it good? I've never watched it. Naruto Shapudin has more filler than One Piece does in terms of ratio.
Rob:Oh, 100%. It's 500 episodes.
Christa:Uh I just finished about 200 are the more important.
Rob:Yeah.
Christa:Dang.
Rob:Maybe 250.
Siobhan:Yeah, okay. I feel like Full Metal Alchemists, like to me, Full Metal doesn't have any filler. Well, no, again, I think that's a good thing. Brotherhood doesn't. Yeah, yeah, I can't do it in the original show. Well, and the original is similar. I mean, I've watched a couple of the anime. I have the manga.
Christa:Me too.
Siobhan:And so, like, and the manga's so good. The manga for full metal is so good, you guys.
Christa:It's so good. It's so good.
Siobhan:And like, I don't know. Like, and again, I came in with Sailor Moon, so like I'm here with like but like I Hey, don't just Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon is not gonna be. No, no, I'm not. I'm not, but it's a very different style in that like it you are like it is the like Sailor Moon's a little camp.
Christa:I don't want to say campy, but no, it is campy, and Full Metal Alchemist is like blood and war. Like it is which I there's so body mutilation, yes, horror.
Siobhan:And so like you watch Sailor Moon and you're like, I could sit and watch like 20 episodes and be like, but like Full Metal Alchemist, you're like in for like a depth of story. There's a depth, humanity, and like a beautiful sort of thing.
Christa:It's a wonderful story of how far are you willing to go for your family. Like that's like the gist of Full Metal Alchemist. And I and it's it's it's fabulous. It's such a good story, it's so well told, and it the way they flesh out characters, the way they world build, it's it's fabulous. Edward is one of my favorite characters ever written. Um, and I know I earlier before we were on this episode, was um expressing my love for Dean Winchester from Supernatural, how he's my number one character of all time. Edward is a close second because Dean wins. But Edward falls in the same category of like an older sibling who is willing to go through heaven and hell to make sure that his little brother is okay. And I love that. Yeah.
Siobhan:It's one of those, like, where if you're gonna watch an anime, you need a break after a couple episodes, whereas Sailor Moon, you're like, yeah, I don't need a break.
Christa:I recently was rewatching episodes of Full Metal because Rob was talking to me about it, and I was like, I'm watching this episode uh where like Ed is digging up the corpse of his quote unquote mother, and he's like and he's like throwing up he's like throwing up from like the pain of it, like the pain of his the pain of his body because he's like a double, he's a double amputee. Yeah, he's a double amputee digging up what he thinks is the corpse of his mother that he made to suffer twice. Like it was. He was unsure where the corpse of his mother was. Watch the show. Yeah, don't give it away. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Don't give it away. I mean, it's the crux of the whole thing. Yeah, it really is like like that is a huge turning point for the boys.
Rob:So may I just say, Krista, thank you for recommending the show. You are welcome.
Christa:I'm always here to recommend shows. I love shows.
Rob:I've enjoyed it immensely. Um, Matt has been uh concocting, tediously making it.
Siobhan:Oh my god, there's a Coke bottle coming out here. He's been he's been on that.
Matt:So I will explain how gross. There's a couple of things.
Christa:I'm not a Coca-Cola fan.
Matt:Nope. Trust me. There's a couple of things happening. I don't.
Christa:There's a lot happening over here. Oh, that's a splash. So yeah, that's not that. Okay, yeah, that's not too bad. I thought it was gonna be like a mostly coke drink. I was gonna be like burning.
Matt:This drink to me pertains to an anime, and it's also very deeply personally meaningful. I will explain what is going on, how I modified it. Take this, don't take a sip yet. You might start. Do not drink this. Swirl it up a little. Like I didn't stir, so just there's a nice cube in there. Big ice banging around a little. Big ice. So my character for this is someone that I I I picked a character.
Christa:Did you take a sip of that? No, no, no.
Matt:I don't smelled it.
Siobhan:I thought you took a sip. I was like, didn't he just say I tried to help you and Matt is gonna ruin your time? That's fine.
Matt:It's possible. So Matt always ruins our time.
Siobhan:I don't know. He coordinates this.
Matt:I went with a character that I deeply identify with, and that is uh Kirito or Gasito Kiragaya from Sword Art Online.
Siobhan:If you've never seen Sword Art the whole Oh, your life will be ruined now if you discover it because it's so freaking sad. But it's so it is deeply.
Various:I'm gonna be quiet. Go, Matt.
Matt:Go on, do it. The whole premise is that pretty much Kirato lays down one day and puts on a uh I forget the exact name of it, but he puts on basically a VR headset and gets stuck in a game for like three years. It's a long time. R I P. So it's very like Matrix-esque in the way that if you die in the game, you die in real life. Right. Like, and that's the whole thing. People can't escape, and it's a whole thing because people die in the game and it's very traumatic for those that are in the game as to those that are out of the game. They're kind of bouncing back and forth through the whole thing. He meets Asuna Yuki, who ends up being his wife uh in-game, and then they they basically uh also adopt um uni, who is a little like AI program and basically becomes their child through the whole thing.
Christa:Is that is that the little guy of the series? Yes, yeah, you know how like you know how like some anime is not like the little guy character for marketing is that the little guy's gonna be like, probably like this little, very innocent female.
Matt:The little guy characters at one point, at one point, so there's many iterations of this, and in the first season, they are stuck in sword art online, and then they get in like gun art, and it it it goes from there in in successive seasons. But in the first one, there's this very like pivotal point where Asana and Kirito are basically like eff it, we're going to a cottage by a lake, we're gonna stay there and screw everybody else. And they end up staying there for a significant amount of time, and then they're like, We should probably do something to end this freaking nightmare that's going on right now. And Kirito's whole thing is that he's beautifully understated the entire time. Like nobody knows what he's capable of. He tries to stay out of the limelight, he has no uh investment in being like the hero at any point. But he's just that damn good at the game that it ends up being him by default, and he's like, I have to freaking do it. And he ends up out of there, and then in successive seasons, kind of saving the world. And I identify with that as being like, I just want to go to the lake and be with my freaking family and not deal with anything else. Does sound like you and then has to come back and be like, son of a bitch, I have to save the world.
Christa:I have to freaking fix things right now. He'd be out here, he'd be out here trying to just chill with his girl. But uh, isn't he with a different girl in season two?
Matt:Oh no, he's not. He's still with Asana through the whole thing.
Rob:Who's the who's the second girl in Drave? Gotta be pronounced something definite. Asana, sorry. Yes, yes. Asana.
Christa:Asana. I mean, you never know. Asina.
Matt:To be fair, the whole second season is actually that's the gun one, right?
Christa:It's gun as well.
Matt:It's the gun one, but there's kind of the intermediary between the initial him getting out of the game and the second one where he's trying to save Asana because she's still in another game.
Christa:Yeah, doesn't he have a I don't want to say I don't want to say fling, but there's a another girl who shows up in the second season that they they do like a there's a little flingy.
Matt:Yeah, yeah.
Christa:Like will they won't they type of containment type thing.
Matt:He comes home to mama. So the drink is sort of like.
Siobhan:Okay, so tell tell me about how this drink comes.
Matt:Yeah, what's the what's the yeah, what's what's the drink link? Kirito is the black swordsman in the original.
Various:He's the what?
Matt:He's the black swordsman in the original. He has two different swords that he fight, but he is the known as the black swordsman, and his movements through the whole thing are very fluid. I wanted to capture a darker flavor here, and what I did was I took Kalua and Vanilla vodka, the vanilla to be with his very smooth movements, and also the edges of the sword and and the swords that he carries have that black and white distinction in them. I also put a little coke on top of it for that family sweetness there, but also this drink means a little more to me. This was the first alcoholic drink I ever had, it was a black Russian from my dad and my grandfather made it. So I think there's no milk in it, right?
Siobhan:That's a white Russian. I don't know if that's a race, but that's a white Russian. No, I just mean like clarifying for the I prefer white Russian.
Matt:The black Russian is vodka and clue, and in this case it's vanilla, vodka and clue with a little bit of coke, which is so I I was very worried as usual.
Siobhan:Um Rob is literally worried about Tom on this podcast.
Rob:I'm just worried about Matt's drinks because sometimes he comes out of left field with something. But I think Matt, you give yourself a stellar sip.
Siobhan:Like I agree, do it.
Matt:Stellar sip.
Christa:Circling back to the drink though, Kahlua is one of those like things that I always have in my liquor cabinet, and I never know what to do with it. Like I only ever drink white Russians with this thing. So it's nice it's nice to be able to drink something else with Kallua.
Siobhan:That and an espresso martini, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Maybe other things?
Christa:I don't I don't have an espresso machine, so I don't know.
Matt:No one knows. Now that's not in the repertoire. Right. Yeah. So we have to do that. I don't know, this isn't that difficult. It's a determined winner, and it's it's both based on character who would win in a fight and drinks.
Rob:Well, I I I mean, I I'm gonna make this very easy if I if I may cast my my vote first.
Siobhan:Feel free. Go for it.
Rob:Um Luffy is one of the most OP characters in all of anime lore, and the drink was phenomenal both in presentation and taste. My vote is for Krista.
Christa:Thank you. Yeah. I um I also feel a little bad for picking like an OP character, but I just I love Luffy.
Rob:No, it's okay extraordinarily. Luffy as an overpowered and OP is a. Of course.
Christa:One piece. OPOP. Yeah. OP O P. Ah. Um, I feel like I want to cast my drink for Siobhan. I I loved, I love the like purple glitter aesthetic. It reminds me of my friend Davina, um, who I love dearly. Um I know her. Hey, you do know her. I sure do. Her favorite color is purple, but no, I love I love Sailor Moon. I think it's such good feminine energy. I loved the drink. This is definitely something I will drink come summer. Like this is this is something I would drink while reading on my porch 100%. So I cast my vote for Sippon.
Siobhan:Yay! I mean, I will definitely also cast a vote for Krista's drink. I need to watch One Piece, which is what will happen.
Christa:One Piece is fabulous, but again, this like Gear 5 Luffy, which is what my drink is made for, does not pull up until episode 1071. So I'll call you in advance.
Siobhan:I'll call you in seven years.
Christa:Yeah, yeah, dead ass. It's when I've seen that episode. My New Year's resolution last year.
Matt:I'll hear from you in three years. Right, correct.
Christa:My New Year's New Year's resolution last year was finish One Piece, and I finished it in October of last year. So it took me like 10 months. That's crazy.
Siobhan:And that was me grinding, like, whoa. I will I'll boot, I'll put a caveat because I haven't watched One Piece, which when I do watch One Piece, we will do a revisit. Sailor Moon still feels pretty like battle heavy. Like she not gonna back down, right? And she she doesn't she doesn't back down from a big one. I will not acquiesce to the battle part, but I will acquiesce to the drink part. Acquiesce. Yes, I will do that. Quies.
Rob:I will say Sailor Sailor Moon, not a god.
Siobhan:No, but she has a silver crystal, so she can say I don't know if you see right time. Yeah, I don't know if you've seen the moon princess surrender. Oh, yeah, no, there's a whole yeah, there's a whole element to her. Okay, which we didn't dive, we didn't dive into, which is fine.
Rob:I still leave my vote with Luffy. Who are you voting for?
Siobhan:I already said Krista.
Rob:Okay, okay. I'm just making sure. Okay, so two for Krista, one for Siobhan, Matthew. Oh the choice resides with you.
Siobhan:And is that a tie?
Rob:It's both, or is it a win? Which I'm not mad at it. And if it's a tie, how do we break said tie?
Christa:Or you could vote for yours or Rob's drive. I was gonna say, I can vote for myself.
Matt:Okay, uh the side eye Siobhan just gave me was true. I didn't like it. That wasn't even intentional. I'm gonna crawl over this couch and strain over.
Rob:He can vote for himself because then we'd still have a winner.
Various:That's true. That's true. That's why I'm gonna do that.
Rob:Right, but okay, so let no, but let's talk about your character. Okay, forget how good or bad your drink might be.
Various:Let's talk about your powerful phenomenally, exquisitely life-changing and shitty ass your drink, maybe.
Rob:No, all I'm saying is forget the drink for a second. Your character I've never heard of, and it's not gonna beat Sailor Moon or Luffy.
Christa:Um, right. Correct. I feel like in terms of power levels, Sailor Moon and Luffy or Swordsman, he's gonna make it a little bit more than a few.
Siobhan:In his own realm is really powerful and great. Correct. Like in like anymore.
Matt:But only in the virtual realm. He does quite a bit in the real world as well. He's pretty much.
Rob:Genius, but but in the real world, does he actually have any powers? Not so much. No, no, no. It's not well bit okay. And the answer is that. He's got the brain. So regardless of the thing.
Christa:So Sage Moon, Roy Mustang, and Luffy all that actually is happening.
Matt:The thing is, Krista's gonna win here, and honestly, I gotta I gotta vote for her character and her interview. Honestly it's a phenomenal thing. I mean, it's not the character, but a stellar ship for Krista.
Various:Please. Thank you. The dub for sure.
Rob:Taking it home. The anime booze bag. There you go. Okay, now before we sign off.
Christa:Guys, wait, I made I made all the straws by hand. I just want to know. I painted them myself. I was wondering. So I painted these yourself. And painted them myself.
Siobhan:Can I also express that you just told that to us after we all also voted for that? So she didn't even try that.
Christa:That wasn't a voting point. I did make these all myself. I love this. I'm so grateful that we've been the right way. My vision was I wanted to have the straw hat because that's like so loofy. Um, so yeah, I cut foam and styrofoam myself. Okay, and no, no, no.
Siobhan:There's no way that wasn't gonna win then. So I'm so glad we didn't prefer these two. I don't wanna, I don't wanna, yeah, I don't wanna be too hungry.
Christa:Great win, Krista. Oh my god, guys, my friend just had her baby today.
Rob:Oh wow. Well, on that note, you win twice. Look at you. You got a W in this and your W right here.
Christa:My friend Rita had her baby. She was Auntie, Krista! Rita has a baby. Give her a shout. She was my friend Rita had her baby boy. So I have to tell her congratulations to Rita and Evan. Horizon, congratulations! Congratulations!
Rob:All right, well, hey, Krista, also congratulations to you. Yes, for you. What an awesome time.
Siobhan:Cheers. Love it. Love it. This is a good time.
Matt:Stellar. And thank you all for listening.
